In the Gospel of the Bible, Jesus said that the door to salvation is narrow. In Ch. 18 of Kardec’s book The Gospel according to Spiritism (translated by Janet Duncan) it’s explained like this:

“Wide is the door to damnation , because evil passions [selfishness, prejudice, violence, etc.] are numerous and the vast majority of humanity follows this pathway.”

“That of salvation is narrow, because man is obliged to exert great control over himself in order to dominate his evil tendencies if he wishes to pass through, and, this is something that few are resigned enough to do….”

“This then is the situation of terrestrial humanity, because as the Earth is a world of atonement, evil is the predominating factor. When the planet has been transformed, the pathway to goodness will be the one most frequently followed…”

“But what crimes has humanity committed to deserve such an unhappy state of affairs, in the

present and the future, if everything here on Earth is so degraded, and if the soul has had no other
existences? Why are there so many obstacles placed before each one? Why is the gateway so narrow as to allow only a few to enter if the destiny of the soul is permanently determined immediately after death?”

“In this way, with only one existence, Man would always be at odds with himself and with God's justice.”

“But with the pre-existence of the soul [and reincarnation] and the plurality of worlds, the horizons spread out…. enlightenment comes to even the most obscure points of faith; the present and the future become linked to the past, and it is then that it is possible to understand the depth, truth and wisdom of those words spoken by Christ.”

“Preface: How terrible is the idea of nothingness! How deserving of pity are those who think that the voice of one who weeps [for a departed loved one] is lost in a vacuum, without encountering the least sign of response! If till now reason has been insufficient for them to have been able to dissipate their doubts, behold, [spirits have] come to dispel all uncertainty as to the future, by means of the material proof of survival of the soul and the existence of beings in the beyond…! This is happening to such an extent, that on all sides these proofs are being received with joy….”

A PRAYER (to those who recently left Earth)

O Lord, may You see fit to favorably receive this prayer in the name of all those who have left this earthly life…Help them perceive the divine lights that will make their pathway to eternal happiness easier. Permit the good Spirits to take them our words and thoughts…and LOVE!

All, who were so dear to us in this world, listen to our voices which call to offer anew our pledge of affection. God allowed you to be liberated before us…so wait with resignation for the moment of our reunion in that happier world, where you have arrived before us.

We know that this separation is only temporary, and that however long it may appear to be, its duration is nothing compared to the blessed eternity which God has promised to His chosen ones.

Oh, how sweet and consoling is the certainty that there is nothing between us but a material veil which hides you from our sight! That you can even be here at our side, hear us speak as of old,
or perhaps even better than; to know that you do not forget us as we do not forget you; that our
thoughts are constantly intermingling and that your thoughts accompany us and uphold us.
God Bless you all!                           AMEN

(Excerpts above from The Gospel according to Spiritism translated by Janet Duncan – prayer is slightly modified)

My Father has always taught me so much. He was talkative, exciting, and things always happened about him. He was a voracious reader, and he discussed with his family at the dinner table what he learned (history a favorite) and also current events.

He did much in his life. While in the military he majored in forensic pathology at the University of Hawaii; was a certified lifeguard, a postman and, an assistant to a Colonel. Later, he worked as a surgical technician in operating rooms; then decided to become a licensed power plant engineer working for the Veterans Administration, and later became a Local Union President of the American Federation of Government Employees Union working for fair working conditions for all federal employees in 11 different federal agencies. He hated injustices, and I believe he passed that trait onto our family and also that of providing service to others.

When we were young, soaking in seawater at the beach here in Florida, he would often speak to us of God - All Powerful and All Love; the Creator of Everything. He said we should try to be good. Our faith and spirituality grew strong from these talks.

However, the most interesting thing about my father was that he was a medium. He could hear, see and talk to spirits. He was also a trance medium. When he was older, he told me his spirit could go around the room while another spirit used his body to communicate (an out-of -body experience). From the spirits throughout the years, he received very interesting communications from all levels of spirits. One time, a spirit protector communicated to say that he and I had decided prior to incarnating in this lifetime, to work together to help each other in the field of Spiritism. I feel it was a wonderful collaboration. Our family is grateful for his teaching us about Spirit science and morality.

A few days before a spirit session, he’d get a look on his face. I would glance at him, and he would say to me, “They’re already lining up.” He saw many of the spirits who were going to communicate. Others not known would come as well….I do remember the very first time he communicated with me (through me via writing) after his transition to the spirit world. I had no doubt it was him, his personality was so very unique! Happy Father’s Day, Dad!

It is not by mere chance that the obvious faculty of mediumship has been given to certain people. And, those who use it according to the Spiritist Practice know that to act as an intermediary for the spirit world is a tremendous responsibility. A period of serious education, study and practice is necessary to understand this fully and for the medium to exercise critical discernment and a certain amount of control of their faculty.

First, the spirits who communicate are for the benefit of the medium’s own moral and spiritual education. The mediums will have no excuse regarding why they are here in the material world and where they will go after material life.

Secondly, if possible, it is so others may benefit by listening and learning from the various communications of the many different spirits of various moral and intellectual levels (each with their own personal story providing lessons) and also the many spirit communications of consolation, inspiration, and those that provide higher level moral and spiritual education.

However, mediumship is to also help the spirits who actually communicate. It is a great charity to help the many spirits in the spirit world, especially those that are in distress, angry, feel lost, in confusion or in turmoil – some of them having been that way for centuries according to the way we count time.

It is an opportunity for them to use the mediums to communicate, and for us here in the material world to help them understand their particular situation (where they are and what they need do to find healing and some peace). We try to help them take whatever step is necessary for them to move forward from their current troubled state,
towards a more loving, morally and spiritually higher level pathway within the spirit world.
This involves cooperation with the spirit guides of the mediums involved, and those of the spirit guides of the particular Spiritist group or center.

The spirit guides coordinate and bring what spirits need to or should communicate. The mediums must merit spiritual protection in order for all to work in as much harmony as possible, to create a favorable ambiance for the benefit of all concerned in this entire process.

The spirit session itself has been described as a symphony, with all the parts played (the mediums, spirit guides, and attendees) striving to attain a harmonious spiritual union. See below for what can facilitate this.
As it states in Kardec’s The Mediums Book, Ch. XXIX, item 331:

A Spiritist meeting is a “collective being whose qualities and properties are the result of the totality of its members.”

What we must strive for are the qualities of an Instructive Spiritist Meeting, and they are:
1- a grave and concentrated mind
2- a community of views and sentiments
3- reciprocity of kindly feelings among the members
4- abnegation of every sentiment contrary to charity
5- a general desire of the truth
6- exclusion from the setting of everything of frivolity
7- concentration of thought and desire in the pursuit of the common end and in the evocation of the spirits whose presence is desired
8- cooperation of the mediums, with the disinterested desire to be useful, without vanity, ambition, or any other selfish motive

(This list is a summary of information from The Mediums Book, Ch. XXIX)
Spirit communication received by Alysia Pape

Summer time is here again, and it's a time when most families plan time together and take vacations.
Make sure you savor the time you spend with your family and friends, even if you don't end up going on any expensive fancy vacation. No one knows when it is time to return to the spirit world.
Once you make memories, cherish them and next year remind everyone with a story of, “remember when?”
There are so many ways to make memories and make an impact on the people that are around us. It is good for the soul to be with others and to “live off of” the happiness and joy that friends and family bring.
Do not spend the summer all alone; get outside and enjoy the sun and life, try to lighten up your existence!

A small reminder to all, first enjoy the little things in life.
If you have a special someone in your life remember to communicate with them, be it good or bad. No matter the feelings, news, or life changes - it's very important.
Remember to love your friends and foes. Forgive, and keep an open mind and heart. Help others as much as you are able. Respect and care for your elders. Mind your manners.
Last but not least, don't forget to pray to God every day and to thank God for everything that comes your way. [Blessings & lessons! - Y.L.]

The beautiful sun shining down on the sand and waves; I take note of the colors revealed by the sun when it breaks out from the clouds.
Gazing across the open water the sun shines through the green-blue shallows, making it seem like liquid crystal, and I can see the wonderful creatures below.
When the breeze blows over me, I breathe in the cool air and see the birds drift in front of me.
I marvel at the unfathomable joy and awe the beach and ocean brings me, and I thank God for this place of peace and healing of mine.
God has made a place for everyone. Where is yours?

“When Life’s deceptions overwhelm you, when doubt tortures your mind, go to the seashore, and if there is left one atom of sentiment within you, if the fibers of your soul are moved by the marvelous and spectacular scene there, sit in the sand, contemplate the waves with their mantles of clear foam, listen attentively and comprehend what the waves are saying with their eternal murmur, and you will see how unconsciously your thoughts will elevate, searching for the cause of such a grand effect.” – Father Germain
