Spiritist Society of Florida - April Newsletter

Written by Yvonne Crespo Limoges

On April 3rd on the TODAY show Maria Shriver discussed what people believed regarding an Afterlife.

NBC apparently conducted a poll which“revealed that 55 percent of Americans believe there is a place people go when they die, while 37 percent are unsure and eight percent do not believe.”

Also mentioned in the show was that there was a common theme that people in general claimed to be more “spiritual than religious”, which to me means that people are questioning and not necessarily believing in any particular religious dogma but are deciding  themselves what they believe spiritually, using their own heart, mind and conscience.

Many reported having spiritual experiences that have shaped their beliefs such as out-of-body and near-death experiences.

It is wonderful that these discussions are on a show that has such a wide and mainstream audience.

The fact that traditional church attendance continues to decline, I believe it important that at least in these types of TV programs people can receive information of a spiritual nature, and confirmation, reassurance and consolation by noting that there are others who may believe as they do; that many believe in the simple reality of life after physical death of the body and that our very essence - our individuality- our soul continues on!

There may be differences as to what the “Afterlife” is and what each may find there, but the fact that manybelieve that material life is not all there is…brings  great hope and expands the horizon on what LIFE truly is.

This knowledge can change the way people live their life in the material world (shifting focus less on material things and more on being a better person), bringing hope to those who suffer and those with terminal illnesses, and help console those whose loved ones haveal ready passed on into the afterlife.

TV SHOW - BONES – Do spirits exist?
Written by Yvonne C. Limoges

On the TV show BONES (about a fictitious world famous forensic anthropologist), a recent episode featured a medium (played by singer/actress Cindi Lauper who has appeared several times in the same role) that brought on a wonderful discussion held with a materialistic scientist about whether spirits really exist.

An individual on the show put forth the fact that down through the ages, there were many things scientists did NOT know existed (microbes, other planets besides earth, and other scientific discoveries) but they were eventually proven to exist. She ended with this question, “Why not spirits?” The scientist finally conceded this was true and indicated from now on he would have a more open mind…The ideas brought forth on this popular show will provide many an opportunity to contemplate for themselves upon what I believe are important spiritual matters.

The characteristic of human intelligence lends responsibility for care of the less evolved.

We must practice compassion and gratuity toward all, especially humans, as well as animals and plants…those of a lesser capacity.

But,cherish all life, and act upon this sentiment by good guardianship.

Benevolent acts benefit and elevate many, as we affect one and another while existing as communal earthly beings.

Participate as a steward of care that creates positive and far-reaching results.

Be of good guardianship.

OURPLANET- Earth Day, Every Day
Inspirationally Received by Yvonne C. Limoges

The planet earth is “our home” and taking care of it is a tremendous responsibility, just as important as taking care of your personal selves, family and friends, and all humanity in general.

Material life is indispensable to the progression of all souls and without a planet to sustain this process in a relatively healthy way, it compromises this purpose.

How shortsighted mankind is in taking so many actions considering only current wants and needs without considering and/or caring about the negative repercussions these may bring to the planet in the future which can affect future generations.

Do whatever is in your power to keep your planet healthy and sustainable. Remember, you may have to reincarnate on this same planet many times, reaping the effects of what has been done or not done to care for and protect it.

PRIDE….the master of all our defects…

Our destiny is created by ourselves...

Inspirationally received by Julie L.Harper

Your greatest endeavor is to nurture your soul.

But,outside influences often cause distractions; many acts are frivolous and neglectful to your inner being.

Your consciousness and essence exist beyond death, so strive to maintain good spiritual progression.

Make morality, grace, ethics, and love your priority always.

As a life of integrity strengthens your character, good choices promote peace now and beyond.

Empower your eternal soul.

The spark of a dream is born by your heart's desire.

Do not let discouragement deter progress.

Inspiration beckons to be realized, so act to satisfy your dreams.

We have always emphasized saying prayers for spiritual protection and especially for protection and peace within our homes.

Famous Spiritist writer and medium from Spain, Miguel Vives,in his book A Practical Guide for the Spiritist, discusses this power of prayer in detail. He uses the analogy of putting a fence or protective barrier around one’s home in order to keep out potential intruders, in this case unwanted spirits.

A situation recently occurred relating to the above that I will share. Fortunately, I can report this in more detail because two of the parties involved were mediums, one of them me.

I was standing in my doorway when my friend came up to me.Pointing a little away from the house, my friend asked, “Do you see that spirit right there?” I instantly saw the spirit, and replied, “Yes, but it cannot come into this house.”

My friend stated that this not-so-nice spirit (he could feel the animosity it had) was following him around. He had even turned around towards the spirit at one point and they were in extreme proximity face-to-face with each other. My friend then turned around and walked away from it towards my house.

I knew (completely sensed) that this spirit could NOT come into my house because of the spiritual protection it had. The spirit just stood there outside looking at the two of us in the doorway.

Later that week, at our regular spirit session with our mediums’group, the same spirit communicated. It stated, “I only now could get into this house.” The spirit was spoken to by the director of the session about its disagreeable and unacceptable behavior and that had been brought into the house now so that it could be told that it was time to leave the side of my friend. It was then taken away by our spirit guides.

Prayer has real power if it is sincere and merited.
It is something that should be consistently practiced so as to protect the spiritual ambiance about you, your family and friends, and wherever you may live.

(NOTE: Miguel Vives’ book A Practical Guide for the Spiritist was translated from the Spanish into English for the very first time by Edgar Crespo, our Society’s founder. Only 61 pages long, it can be bought on www.amazon.com
and it is very valuable in providing specific moral guidelines on how we should live our life properly, using the morality taught by Jesus and knowledge of the Spiritist Doctrine)

According to the responses received by Allan Kardec and his Spiritist Society, our spirit protectors are spirits that are with a particular individual to protect and assist them; they are of a higher degree then the individual; their mission is to lead the individual“into the right road, to aid him with his counsels, to console him in hi safflictions, and sustain his courage under the trials of his earthly life”;and, they are attached from one’s birth to physical death, and often follow that individual soul’s into the spirit life, as well as into other successive material existences. A spirit states:

“…To think that you have always near you beings who are superior to you, and who are always beside you to counsel you, to sustain you, to aid you in climbing the steep ascent of self-improvement, whose friendship is truer and more devoted than the most intimate union that you can contract upon the earth – is not such an idea most consoling? These beings are near you by the command of God…Nothing ever separates you from the friend whom you cannot see, but whose gentle impulsion are felt, and whose wise monitions [warnings] are heard, in the innermost recesses of your heart….”

(Information above taken from Allan Kardec’s The Spirits’ Book,Second Section, Chapter IX, questions 489 to 495, translated into English from the French by Anna Blackwell)

“When Christ said: “Blessed be the afflicted, for the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to them”, He did not refer to all those who suffer, seeing that everyone on Earth suffers, whether they be seated upon thrones or lie upon straw. But alas, so few suffer well!”

“A mere handful, understand that only trials which have been well supported can lead to the Kingdom of God…”

“Prayer supports the soul; however, alone it is not enough. It is also necessary to have a firm belief in the kindness of God as the basis for deep faith.”

“You have heard it said many times that He does not put a heavy burden on weak shoulders. The burden is always in proportion to the strength, just as the recompense depends on the degree of resignation and courage.”

“The more painful the affliction [is] the greater the recompense. It behooves then to make ourselves worthy and it is for this purpose that life presents itself so full of tribulations.”

“The soldier who is not sent to the front is discontent because by resting in camp he will never receive promotion.”

“So then, be like soldiers and do not desire repose which will only allow the body to debilitate, and benumb the soul! Be content when God sends you into battle because this is not a battle of the firing-line, but of the bitterness of life, where frequently the one who stands firm before an enemy weakens when confronted with the tenacity of moral suffering.”

“Although there is no reward for this kind of courage on Earth, God will reserve the laurels of victory and a place of glory for those who withstand.”

“When facing sufferings or obstacles, if you are able to place yourself above the situation, by managing to dominate the impulses of impatience, anger and despair, then you may say to yourself with just satisfaction, ‘I was the stronger’.”

“So then, blessed are the afflicted may be translated in the following manner: blessed are those who have occasion to prove their faith, firmness, perseverance, and submission to the Will of God, because they will have multiplied a hundred times the happiness they lacked on Earth, for after labor comes repose.”

Spirit communication by LA CORDIARE in 1863

(From Allan Kardec’s The Gospel according to Spiritism,Chapter 5, Item 18. and translated from the French by Janet Duncan. Remember,we receive our rewards for our courage here on earth, when we return to the spirit world and by our soul’s progression.)

Dear God, help me to have courage to support the life I chose to undergo…knowing that it would be one that would assist me to make amends where needed, and to do good whenever I would be able to.

I know what I chose would provide for my soul’s moral and intellectual progress. Help me to be receptive to my spirit protectors’ inspiration and guidance. I know that God never abandons us, so I must be strong and do my part to support my trials and tests,as well as fulfill the missions in my life. AMEN
